{"id":7964,"date":"2014-08-14T18:19:58","date_gmt":"2014-08-14T22:19:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=7964"},"modified":"2014-08-14T18:19:58","modified_gmt":"2014-08-14T22:19:58","slug":"prepaid-card-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=7964","title":{"rendered":"Prepaid Card Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Prepaid-Card-Scam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7966\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Prepaid-Card-Scam-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Prepaid Card Scam\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Prepaid-Card-Scam-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Prepaid-Card-Scam.jpg 553w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Please spread the word to your friends, family, co-workers and anyone else who may be vulnerable:\u00a0 Do not fall for prepaid card scams!\u00a0 Every week I read cases where victims have been tricked out of money by suspects on the phone posing as anyone from a local power company, to the IRS, to law enforcement.\u00a0 It is a national problem.<\/p>\n<p>The scam occurs when an unscrupulous ne\u2019er-do-well calls a victim.\u00a0 It goes something like this, \u201cI\u2019m Supervisor Smith from Duke Energy.\u00a0 Your business account is in arrears and you need to make a payment by prepaid card before 11 a.m. today or your power will shut off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prepaid cards are available from most major credit card companies and financial institutions.\u00a0 A consumer \u201cloads\u201d the card with money and uses it as one would use a credit card.\u00a0 The card numbers and PINs are given to the official-sounding bad guy over the phone and the money goes poof.<\/p>\n<p>Often the suspect will have background information on his mark to make the call seem legitimate\u2014such as previous payment dates, account numbers, personal information, or even names of relatives.\u00a0 These are obtained over the Internet or through illegitimate means.<\/p>\n<p>We first started seeing this fraud late last year at local restaurants.\u00a0 The manager would receive a call shortly before lunch service from <!--more-->a bad guy saying that they needed to load anywhere from $500.00 to $2,000.00 onto prepaid Green Dot cards.\u00a0 They would be given a phone number to call back with the card numbers to make the \u201cpayment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And some restaurant managers fell for it.\u00a0 Since then, the scam has progress into other areas, like a call from the IRS saying that they did not receive your taxes.\u00a0 But the reports I have been reading have gotten much darker of late.<\/p>\n<p>The suspects have been targeting the elderly.\u00a0 In one heartbreaking report a senior citizen received a phone call from his sobbing son, who was distraught, then a \u201cpoliceman\u201d came on the line and said a payment was needed to keep the man\u2019s son out of jail.\u00a0 He was told the money needed to be received before a hearing that morning.<\/p>\n<p>The man rushed to the bank, loaded several prepaid cards, then called the \u201cpoliceman\u201d back, giving him the card numbers and PINs.\u00a0 It was especially sad that the man had actually contacted his lawyer, who flat-out told him it was a scam.\u00a0 The victim, who was terrified for his son, sent the money anyway.<\/p>\n<p>You probably have guessed that the \u201cson,\u201d with whom the man exchanged only a few brief words, was not really his son.\u00a0 I did feel bad for that old fella.\u00a0 I won\u2019t go into the criminal intel about where the funds are going in these scams, except to say it is out of the Continental U.S. and that the money isn\u2019t coming back.<\/p>\n<p>Education is the key here.\u00a0 First of all, no legitimate business or government agency will ask you to pay anything with a prepaid card.\u00a0 If in doubt, make your own call to a customer service number found on a bill, in a phone directory, or via an official website.\u00a0 Be suspicious.\u00a0 And spread the word.<\/p>\n<p>Randall<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Please spread the word to your friends, family, co-workers and anyone else who may be vulnerable:\u00a0 Do not fall for prepaid card scams!\u00a0 Every week I read cases where victims have been tricked out of money by suspects on the phone posing as anyone from a local power company, to the IRS, to law enforcement.\u00a0 It is a national problem.
