{"id":5723,"date":"2013-06-12T11:33:12","date_gmt":"2013-06-12T15:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=5723"},"modified":"2013-06-12T20:11:49","modified_gmt":"2013-06-13T00:11:49","slug":"colonial-knives-tat-cutter-tsa-compliant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=5723","title":{"rendered":"Colonial Knives Tat Cutter&#8211;TSA Compliant?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5732\" title=\"TAT\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1534\" height=\"1096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT.jpg 1534w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT-1024x731.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1534px) 100vw, 1534px\" \/><\/a>At the Blade Show 2013, I had a chance to trade ideas with Steve Paolantonio, the owner of the <a title=\"Colonial Knife Company\" href=\"http:\/\/www.colonialknifecorp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colonial Knife Company<\/a>.\u00a0 There was a banner at the back of the booth proclaiming:\u00a0 &#8220;<a title=\"Colonial Knives Tat Cutter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.colonialknifecorp.com\/tat-cutter.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Colonial Knives Tat Cutter<\/a>&#8211;TSA Compliant.&#8221;\u00a0 Or words to that effect.\u00a0 I was curious, since I had just flown in sans sharp objects.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Paolantonio showed me the little rescue hook.\u00a0 He said the marketing of the cutter was purely by accident.\u00a0 Paolantonio said he loves the outdoors and is a rock climber.\u00a0 To save on weight, he disassembled a <a title=\"Colonial Rescue Hook Auto Tool\" href=\"http:\/\/www.colonialknifecorp.com\/505RescueHookTool.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Colonial Rescue Hook Auto Tool<\/a> and hung the steel cutting portion on some ball chain around his neck for clambering about on the vertical faces.<\/p>\n<p>During a sales meeting with a distributor, Paolantonio confessed that the rep was ordering catalog items, when she saw the jewelry on his neck.\u00a0 She said, &#8220;&#8230;and I&#8217;ll order some of those, too.&#8221;\u00a0 He was puzzled, until he realized she meant the rescue hook he was wearing.\u00a0 Thus, the Tat Cutter became one of Colonial&#8217;s products.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Paolantonio gave me a Tat Cutter and said to &#8220;take it in your carry on when you fly out.&#8221;\u00a0 He stated he had flown with his on a key ring for years and had never had it confiscated at TSA.\u00a0 You&#8217;re on, I said.\u00a0 (Legal disclaimer:\u00a0 I am not<!--more--> recommending this.\u00a0 Be aware that confiscation is a possibility.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5733\" title=\"TAT2\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT2.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT2-300x264.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TAT2-1024x901.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ColonialTAT.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5731\" title=\"ColonialTAT\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ColonialTAT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1577\" height=\"1151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ColonialTAT.jpg 1577w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ColonialTAT-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ColonialTAT-1024x747.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1577px) 100vw, 1577px\" \/><\/a>The Tat Cutter is Made in the USA.\u00a0 The hook is 0.110&#8243; thick 440C stainless steel, Rockwell hardness 58-60.\u00a0 The key ring is provide, but the ball chain is not. \u00a0 Colonial has also come out with a Tat Cutter with a removable pocket clip.<\/p>\n<p>For uses, Mr. Paolantonio says he draws on the Tat for slicing box tape, severing plastic ties, and opening snacks on the plane.\u00a0 It can be similarly used on seat belts, rope, and webbing.\u00a0 The pocket clip model can be employed as a money clip.<\/p>\n<p>As to his challenge, the Tat Cutter was threaded on my key ring, which was placed inside my carry on bag when I went through Hartsfield-Jackson.\u00a0 It sailed through TSA without a problem.\u00a0 <a title=\"TSA prohibited items\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/traveler-information\/prohibited-items\" target=\"_blank\">TSA compliant<\/a>?\u00a0 I&#8217;d call it TSA-unnoticed for now.\u00a0 Since scissors with blades less than 4&#8243;
