\"\"<\/a>Cool looking ladder. \u00a0The Atlas Devices<\/a> vendor was busy showing it to a guy in khaki pants and a polo shirt. \u00a0His name badge read only USSOCOM. \u00a0No name. \u00a0No branch. \u00a0No unit. \u00a0A real Operator. \u00a0With a U.S. government line of credit.<\/p>\n

I wanted to see the ladder, but the free market kinda had the floor. \u00a0I came back to Atlas’ SOFIC booth an hour later. \u00a0My audience was granted at that point.<\/p>\n

This lightweight tactical ladder articulated out to 10′. \u00a0It weighed a mere 12 lbs. \u00a0It was obviously strong, as the vendor extended it fully, propped each end onto a Pelican case, then stood in its middle and jumped up and down. \u00a0My eyes bugged.<\/p>\n

The guy showed me how to fold it up and open it again. \u00a0Not too difficult. \u00a0It made for a fairly compact package–I can only compare it to the beastly “portable ladders” we have on my TAC unit. \u00a0They are heavy and irritable.<\/p>\n

I hefted the miracle height-maker once more. \u00a0The salesman lamented, “If it only had less titanium…” \u00a0Whuck? \u00a0I asked him, So this whole thing <\/em>is titanium? \u00a0He said, \u00a0“Yup.” \u00a0OMG, what’s it cost? \u00a0He looked ill. \u00a0“Ten thousand dollars.” \u00a0Holy Budget Busters, Batman!<\/p>\n

Alright, so a municipal agency is out of this horse race. \u00a0But for the big boys deploying outside of CONUS, I can see some purchases. \u00a0I told this story to a fellow sergeant at work who has had his share of military uniformed time he can’t talk about. \u00a0He said every ounce matters in the Teams.<\/p>\n

I know advanced technology comes with a price tag. \u00a0My experience is that the cost falls with time. \u00a0And I got to hold a ten thousand dollar ladder. \u00a0How cool is that!<\/p>\n
