{"id":3066,"date":"2012-10-30T12:58:07","date_gmt":"2012-10-30T16:58:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=3066"},"modified":"2013-02-27T10:59:42","modified_gmt":"2013-02-27T15:59:42","slug":"testing-national-police-ammunitions-simulated-duty-round","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=3066","title":{"rendered":"Testing National Police Ammunition&#8217;s Simulated Duty Round"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dH58RgsEgB4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"National Police Ammunition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npee.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Police Ammunition<\/a> is an ATF licensed South Florida manufacturer of law enforcement ammunition.\u00a0 NPA specializes in lead-free, frangible ammo and has developed the SDR, or <a title=\"Simulated Duty Round\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npee.org\/products\" target=\"_blank\">Simulated Duty Round<\/a>, for police applications.<\/p>\n<p>The SDR is designed to mimic the performance of police duty rounds and be an accurate, reliable, and cost effective alternative.\u00a0 NPA lists some of the following advantages:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Proprietary loading techniques prevents projectiles breaking when chambered which is common with frangible ammunition<br \/>\n\u2022 Power factor equivalency \u201cFelt\u201d recoil<br \/>\n\u2022 Line of Sight = Point of Impact<br \/>\n\u2022 Fully Frangible non jacketed projectile<br \/>\n\u2022 Reduced ricochet<br \/>\n\u2022 Available with lead-free, heavy metal free primers (standard primers also available)<br \/>\n\u2022 Superior composition materials generate less carbon residue in the weapon&#8217;s bore.<br \/>\n\u2022 SDR proprietary mixture of powder creates consistent cycling of the weapon.<\/p>\n<p>I had an opportunity to test three boxes of NPA&#8217;s Simulated Duty Rounds at recent practice and qualifications days on the range.\u00a0 NPA&#8217;s Vice President Adam Oliver sent me ammunition in .380 ACP, .40 cal. S&amp;W, and .223 Remington.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0209.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3092\" title=\"IMG_0209\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1300\" height=\"930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0209.jpg 1300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0209-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0209-1024x732.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px\" \/><\/a>I shot the State Qualification course with the .40 cal. SDR&#8217;s in my issued Sig Sauer P226R.\u00a0 The 40 round course of fire is shot between 3 and 15 yards.\u00a0 There is a mandatory reload midway through the drill.\u00a0 The targets are timed to turn, so there is some urgency at points in the qual.\u00a0 I hit my blue B21E target in the 5 zone (C.O.M. and into the head) with all 40 SDR bullets.\u00a0 There were no malfunctions or misfires with the ammo.<\/p>\n<p>I really could not tell I wasn&#8217;t shooting our 155 grain Speer Lawman TMJ practice ammunition.\u00a0 Subjectively, I think the NPA SDR is slightly lighter in recoil than my everyday carry 155 grain Speer Gold Dot Hollowpoints.\u00a0 The SDR in .40 has a 105 grain bullet weight, but launches it at 1420 fps at the muzzle.\u00a0 The GDHP leaves the gun at 1200 fps.\u00a0 Still, the difference in felt recoil to me was negligible.<\/p>\n<p>My department mandates shooting the same State Qualification with any handgun carried either as a secondary weapon or an off-duty weapon.\u00a0 I had already qualled with my S&amp;W Bodyguard 380, so I brought my trusty Kel-Tec P3AT out to the range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Shooting the course with a P3AT or Ruger LCP can be a challenge because of their small<!--more--> grips and lack of stand-up sights.\u00a0 The qualification, while not hard, was made to be shot with full duty-sized pistols.\u00a0 When it was over, I wouldn&#8217;t say the target was pretty, but I only dropped a couple rounds (operator error) and I was within 90% in the 5 zone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1021-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3073\" title=\"DSCN1021 copy\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1021-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1021-copy.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1021-copy-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>I brought out the NPA box of 55 grain .223 Remington for our SWAT rifle qualification.\u00a0 We shoot 60 rounds at distances from 100 yards to CQB.\u00a0 The same B21E target is scored with hits in the 5 zone.\u00a0 My issued Rock River Arms LAR-15 was used.\u00a0 Because I wanted to run a magazine dump later, and I only had the one box of 50 rounds, I randomly inserted 20 of the SDR&#8217;s into my magazines along with the Federal American Eagle &#8220;practice ammo&#8221; we were using that day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1056.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3084\" title=\"DSCN1056\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1056.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1300\" height=\"1076\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1056.jpg 1300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1056-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/DSCN1056-1024x847.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px\" \/><\/a>There was no difference in recoil between the SDR&#8217;s and the Eagles.\u00a0 Again, I had no malfunctions or misfires with the SDR&#8217;s.\u00a0 My target was near perfect, with two rounds I could call as flyers because I was rushing the sights.<\/p>\n<p>For fun, I loaded up the 30 remaining SDR bullets into a magazine and asked one of my team mates perform a mag dump.\u00a0 His SWAT rifle is a 10&#8243;
