Bragg.\u00a0 The ES1-M was later adopted by the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command\u2019s SEALs in 1996.\u00a0 This knife, in \u00be scale, became Emerson\u2019s Commander in 1998 and is still in production today.<\/p>\n<p>Spyderco\u2019s Endura was born in Golden, CO in 1990.\u00a0 The current Endura4 is a lightweight back-lock folding knife with a Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon (FRN) handle and a 3.75\u201d VG-10 flat saber-ground stainless steel blade.\u00a0 It has stainless steel liners for added strength, bi-directional texturing for a better grip, a four position clothing clip, smooth opening bronze phosphor washers, and the ubiquitous Spyderco Blade Opening Hole.<\/p>\n<p>While The Wave is now called the Emerson Opening Feature in Spyderco\u2019s recent catalog, the marriage of The Wave and the Endura4 has resulted in an outstanding defensive\/utility folding knife.<\/p>\n<p>I purchased a Spyderco Endura4 with the Emerson Opening Feature from an on-line retailer for $78.10.\u00a0 MSRP is $124.95.\u00a0 The knife is only available in a plain edge.\u00a0 It was previously made with part serrated or fully serrated blades.\u00a0 The handle is gray, but has always looked dark blue to my aging eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The pivot point and screws on the Waved Endura are bright stainless.\u00a0 I wanted a more subdued look, so I cannibalized a black Endura4 for its stealthy bits.\u00a0 Cautionary disclaimer:\u00a0 taking apart your own knife and swapping parts may void its warranty.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1340\" style=\"width: 1310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3208.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1340\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1340\" title=\"IMG_3208\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1300\" height=\"872\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3208.jpg 1300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3208-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3208-1024x686.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Start of Project<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are several on-line videos that can show you the process for taking apart an Endura.\u00a0 The key is knowing how to disassemble and reassemble the rocker bar pivot point.\u00a0 I did it hands-on only.\u00a0 Some videos suggest a zip tie to act as an extra hand.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1341\" style=\"width: 1310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1341\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1341\" title=\"IMG_3225\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1300\" height=\"975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3225.jpg 1300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3225-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3225-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rocker Bar Pivot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I strongly recommend keeping the rocker bar with its mated blade.\u00a0 As you can see from the photo, there can be differences rocker bars.\u00a0 Each blade and bar junction is fitted to provide secure lock-up.\u00a0 For fun, I tried mixing the stainless blade and black rocker bar.\u00a0 Danger! class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lots of small parts to lose...<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Having swapped out the darker baubles, I thought the blue-gray handle and black hardware looked very nice.\u00a0 I would like to see a black-coated blade and subdued handle on a future Waved Endura4.\u00a0 That would levitate the credit card from my wallet!<\/p>\n<p>I mounted the pocket clip on the left side of the knife so I could carry it in my non-dominant side uniform front pants pocket.\u00a0 With a smart rearward drawing motion, the waved blade snaps open cleanly.\u00a0 It opens best if the handle is positioned almost horizontally when pulled to the rear.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSCN0693.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1344\" title=\"DSCN0693\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSCN0693.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"963\" height=\"881\" (max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have carried the knife on duty and I am very pleased with the opening function of the Wave.\u00a0 A standard thumb stud or opening hole cause one extra motion to extract the blade from the handle.\u00a0 I am also just a bit wary of assisted openers or automatic knives because of the possibility of them firing in your pocket.\u00a0 When these knives have a safety lock to prevent firing, it is yet another feature you have to defeat to bring the knife into play.<\/p>\n<p>I am going to experiment a bit with this style of opening, but so far I really like it.\u00a0 The blade will not prematurely deploy, but a quick, determined draw gives you a ready edge when needed.\u00a0 There are no switches or buttons to find when using the knife, which
