{"id":1198,"date":"2012-04-10T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2012-04-10T12:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=1198"},"modified":"2012-04-10T20:07:51","modified_gmt":"2012-04-11T00:07:51","slug":"law-enforcement-torch-run-for-special-olympics-now-running","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=1198","title":{"rendered":"Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics&#8211;Now Running"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3196.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1200\" title=\"IMG_3196\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1300\" height=\"975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3196.jpg 1300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3196-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_3196-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px\" \/><\/a>The <a title=\"LETR\" href=\"http:\/\/www.specialolympicsflorida.org\/law-enforcement\/torch-run.html\">Law Enforcement Torch Run<\/a> for <a title=\"Special Olympics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.specialolympicsflorida.org\/\">Special Olympics Florida<\/a> came through my county today.\u00a0 The Torch Run is in its 31st year of raising awareness and funds for the Special Olympics.\u00a0 Each year in Florida over 5,000 law enforcement officers from more than 300 agencies will carry the Flame of Hope on a 1,500 mile relay through 66 counties.<\/p>\n<p>The Flame of Hope&#8217;s journey began March 26 in Escambia County and will finish on May 9 in Osceola County, in time for Opening Ceremonies to the Special Olympics Summer Games in Lake Buena Vista, FL on May 18.<\/p>\n<p>For the last ten years or so, Bill has been my agency&#8217;s Special Olympics  representative athlete.\u00a0 Each year, he greets us and thanks us for our  participation.\u00a0 He is right up front at the photo ops and assists in  handing off the torch to our department from the previous relay  department.\u00a0 This morning, Bill told me how excited he is to be cycling  at the Special Olympics Summer Games in May.\u00a0\u00a0 Events hosted at the  Summer Games include track and field, soccer, bocce, tennis, volleyball,  cycling, and other special competitions.<\/p>\n<p>It was a hot, humid, 85 degrees during our run.\u00a0 Our route travels about four miles from a<!--more--> middle school to an LE building.\u00a0 The pace was spirited at times this year since we had some fresh faces in our group, but as usual we kept it together and finished as a team.<\/p>\n<p>Special Olympics raises funds through LETR t-shirt and hat sales and by individual and business contributions along the route.\u00a0 Special Olympians are athletes at least eight years of age with intellectual disabilities.\u00a0 There is no maximum age to participate in the Special Olympics.\u00a0 For those who register, Special Olympics training and competition are open to all persons with intellectual disabilities, regardless of the level or degree of the person&#8217;s disability or whether or not they have other mental or physical disabilities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1205\" style=\"width: 930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/torchrun1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1205\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1205\" title=\"torchrun\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/torchrun1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"920\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/torchrun1.jpg 920w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/torchrun1-300x97.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy:  Special Olympics<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I have proudly participated in the Torch Run since 1996.\u00a0 It raises money and attention for a worthy cause.\u00a0 It has also been a source of camaraderie for those of us who look forward to the charitable run in the Spring.\u00a0 LETR is a chance for us to step outside our usual &#8220;business&#8221;
