{"id":10399,"date":"2015-10-29T09:00:34","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T13:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=10399"},"modified":"2015-10-28T09:52:17","modified_gmt":"2015-10-28T13:52:17","slug":"a-few-long-range-pistol-shots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=10399","title":{"rendered":"A Few Long Range Pistol Shots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sig-and-Range-at-100.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10406\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sig-and-Range-at-100.jpg\" alt=\"Sig and Range at 100\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sig-and-Range-at-100.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sig-and-Range-at-100-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sig-and-Range-at-100-1024x600.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/a>Wednesday was the annual SWAT Qualification Day and I made time to attend. \u00a0Although I am retired from the Team, they graciously let me join them. \u00a0After the physical requirements and marksmanship quals were completed, we had additional ammunition for shooting drills.<\/p>\n<p>The 100-yard range was open and a few of the guys were testing out some pricey long guns brought by a SWAT medic. \u00a0These included an FN SCAR and an FN FS2000. \u00a0While the shooters hammered away at distant silhouette paper targets, I decided to give them some friendly competition&#8211;with my handgun.<\/p>\n<p>On an adjacent shooting bench, I ceremoniously unlimbered my Sig P226 and rested it on a sandbag. \u00a0Its iron sights mocking<!--more--> the other guns&#8217; rifle scopes, my pistol began surveying a blue B-21E downrange. \u00a0One of the mutts commented, &#8220;&#8230;Detective Bureau sniper?&#8221;\u00a0 There was snickering.<\/p>\n<p>I thumbed back the hammer spur on my Sig to get the first round off in single action. \u00a0This particular P226 was an older model with bar and dot sights. \u00a0I carefully lined them up on the tiny man-shape a football field away.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Sig-Sauer-P226R.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8722\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Sig-Sauer-P226R.jpg\" alt=\"Sig Sauer P226R\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Sig-Sauer-P226R.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Sig-Sauer-P226R-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Sig-Sauer-P226R-1024x705.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/a>Bullet drop for the Speer Gold Dot .40 S&amp;W 165 grain at 100 yards is about 8 3\/4 inches, according to the manufacturer. \u00a0Looking across the top of the slide, my sight blade comically looked to be the width of the shoulders of the target. \u00a0I held high, with the neck and head of the bad guy sitting atop the front dot.<\/p>\n<p>Deep breath let half out and a steady rearward trigger squeeze resulted in the pistol&#8217;s first &#8220;surprise bang.&#8221;\u00a0 I let the trigger forward just to where it reset with a click, then repeated the firing drill nine more times before they called the line cold.<\/p>\n<p>Unbeknownst to the Sig and me, our target on Lane 17 had a passel of 9mm holes from the previous MP-5 exercises. \u00a0Ugh. \u00a0A buddy and I combed over the damage. \u00a0We found one very probable and four confirmed center of mass .40 caliber hits in a generous group. \u00a0The rest may well have been there, hidden in the tattered paper. \u00a0Five of 10? \u00a0I will happily take that.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t remember the last time I shot a sidearm at something that was over 25 yards away.
