I’ve learned at least three ways to disable a GILLIG transit bus.<\/p>\n

1203 on a tanker placard means gasoline–much danger.<\/p>\n

Blue street reflectors indicate fire hydrants.\u00a0 Don’t park near them at a structure fire.<\/p>\n

When running lights and siren, use the inside or outside lanes at intersections for easier maneuvering.<\/p>\n

If you are directing traffic, stand in the debris field in the center of the intersection.\u00a0 It’s safer.<\/p>\n

Your patrol car is like Wonder Woman’s invisible jet–everyone can see what happens inside.<\/p>\n

Head wounds bleed profusely and are not necessarily life threatening…but bleeding from the ears is bad.<\/p>\n

Your armed suspect may not be where the complainant said he was.\u00a0 A little situational awareness gets you home for supper.<\/p>\n

Fire Rescue will mess up your scene, but their priorities differ from yours.<\/p>\n

Setting a really big perimeter for your K9 is better than one too small.\u00a0 Think containment.<\/p>\n

Front sight–repeat as needed.<\/p>\n

Always keep an eye out for cover, you never know when you’ll really need it.<\/p>\n

If you are a rookie, keep checking the street signs.\u00a0 Someone may want to know the exact location of your emergency.<\/p>\n

Never give a citizen The Countdown. “You must leave in 5, 4, 3, …2, (Oh, shit, my bluff’s been called.)”<\/p>\n

Be prepared for CQB.\u00a0 Unbeknownst to you, that library book thief just murdered his parents.<\/p>\n

If a citizen’s car runs over a fire hose, America’s Heroes will come after you<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Resist the urge to type while driving.\u00a0 It annoys the sergeant who will be responding to your crash.<\/p>\n

If you don’t want to use defensive tactics on that guy who lays block for a living, learn some verbal finesse.<\/p>\n

Things will go bad, despite your best efforts.\u00a0 Do not be surprised.\u00a0 Fight through it.<\/p>\n

Be objective.\u00a0 The person you feel sorry for will just file an IA complaint.<\/p>\n

Your pretend scowl will be less effective than a professional smile.<\/p>\n

Make a good decision and then stick with it.<\/p>\n

A long gun beats a handgun in a gunfight.\u00a0 Bring yours.<\/p>\n

When in doubt, keep it blacked out.<\/p>\n

Each time you re-approach a car or house is like the first–officer safety switched on.<\/p>\n

Choose your words as if the Chief was standing there as your backup.\u00a0 That’ll keep you out of IA.<\/p>\n

If you backlight me, I will be pissed.<\/p>\n

It is a magazine, not a clip. \u00a0Duh.<\/p>\n

Be a good zone partner and take your share of the goddamn reports.<\/p>\n

Watch my back and I’ll watch yours.<\/p>\n

The Media is here.\u00a0 Refrain from smiling at the murder scene.<\/p>\n

When approaching a crime victim, do not lead with, “How’s it going?”\u00a0 The response will not be pleasant for you.\u00a0 I’ve witnessed this.<\/p>\n

If something goes horribly wrong, call a supervisor.\u00a0 We are paid the “big bucks” to fix the problem.<\/p>\n
