{"id":10135,"date":"2015-08-20T19:39:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T23:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=10135"},"modified":"2015-08-20T20:10:28","modified_gmt":"2015-08-21T00:10:28","slug":"some-things-i-know-from-street-patrol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/?p=10135","title":{"rendered":"Some Things I know from Street Patrol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/K9Chase1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2191\" src=\"http:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/K9Chase1.jpg\" alt=\"K9Chase\" width=\"655\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/K9Chase1.jpg 2142w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/K9Chase1-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thinblueflorida.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/K9Chase1-1024x742.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/a>Some things I know from street patrol:<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve learned at least three ways to disable a GILLIG transit bus.<\/p>\n<p>1203 on a tanker placard means gasoline&#8211;much danger.<\/p>\n<p>Blue street reflectors indicate fire hydrants.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t park near them at a structure fire.<\/p>\n<p>When running lights and siren, use the inside or outside lanes at intersections for easier maneuvering.<\/p>\n<p>If you are directing traffic, stand in the debris field in the center of the intersection.\u00a0 It&#8217;s safer.<\/p>\n<p>Your patrol car is like Wonder Woman&#8217;s invisible jet&#8211;everyone can see what happens inside.<\/p>\n<p>Head wounds bleed profusely and are not necessarily life threatening&#8230;but bleeding from the ears is <!--more-->bad.<\/p>\n<p>Your armed suspect may not be where the complainant said he was.\u00a0 A little situational awareness gets you home for supper.<\/p>\n<p>Fire Rescue will mess up your scene, but their priorities differ from yours.<\/p>\n<p>Setting a really big perimeter for your K9 is better than one too small.\u00a0 Think containment.<\/p>\n<p>Front sight&#8211;repeat as needed.<\/p>\n<p>Always keep an eye out for cover, you never know when you&#8217;ll really need it.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a rookie, keep checking the street signs.\u00a0 Someone may want to know the exact location of your emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Never give a citizen The Countdown. &#8220;You must leave in 5, 4, 3, &#8230;2, (Oh, shit, my bluff&#8217;s been called.)&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Be prepared for CQB.\u00a0 Unbeknownst to you, that library book thief just murdered his parents.<\/p>\n<p>If a citizen&#8217;s car runs over a fire hose, America&#8217;s Heroes will come after <em>you<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Resist the urge to type while driving.\u00a0 It annoys the sergeant who will be responding to your crash.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to use defensive tactics on that guy who lays block for a living, learn some verbal finesse.<\/p>\n<p>Things will go bad, despite your best efforts.\u00a0 Do not be surprised.\u00a0 Fight through it.<\/p>\n<p>Be objective.\u00a0 The person you feel sorry for will just file an IA complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Your pretend scowl will be less effective than a professional smile.<\/p>\n<p>Make a good decision and then stick with it.<\/p>\n<p>A long gun beats a handgun in a gunfight.\u00a0 Bring yours.<\/p>\n<p>When in doubt, keep it blacked out.<\/p>\n<p>Each time you re-approach a car or house is like the first&#8211;officer safety switched on.<\/p>\n<p>Choose your words as if the Chief was standing there as your backup.\u00a0 That&#8217;ll keep you out of IA.<\/p>\n<p>If you backlight me, I will be pissed.<\/p>\n<p>It is a magazine, not a clip. \u00a0Duh.<\/p>\n<p>Be a good zone partner and take your share of the goddamn reports.<\/p>\n<p>Watch my back and I&#8217;ll watch yours.<\/p>\n<p>The Media is here.\u00a0 Refrain from smiling at the murder scene.<\/p>\n<p>When approaching a crime victim, do not lead with, &#8220;How&#8217;s it going?&#8221;\u00a0 The response will not be pleasant for you.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve witnessed this.<\/p>\n<p>If something goes horribly wrong, call a supervisor.\u00a0 We are paid the &#8220;big bucks&#8221; to fix the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Randall<\/p>\n<p>(Add your own tidbits in the Comments section!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some things I know from street patrol: I&#8217;ve learned at least three ways to disable a GILLIG transit bus. 1203 on a tanker placard means gasoline&#8211;much danger.
